Introduction
The notification bar is at the very top of your screen as you view the phone.

The icons from left to right indicate:
- There is one new e-mail
- The phone is connected to a USB cable
- The battery is at 100% (Battery Indicator Pro generates this icon)
- WiFi is on
- Signal strength
- Battery level represented graphically (standard phone battery indicator)
- Date and time
This is pretty standard stuff. But the Android Notification Bar can do more!
Opening the Notification bar
Place you finger just above the top of the notification bar and swipe down. The bar expands and becomes a slide out tray covering the screen.
You can also open the notifications tray by:
- tapping the menu key
- tap notifications

Once you open the notifications bar you will see additional information about the alerts presented in icon form when the bar is closed.
Notification Tray Shortcuts
Tapping on an notification will result in a related action. Usually an application associated with the notification will be opened. In effect the notification has become a shortcut to the associated program.
You can also clear the notifications by tapping the 'Clear Notifications' button.
Close the Notifications Tray
Swiping up with your finger ot pressing the back button (bottom right corner of the phone) will close the notifications tray.
Non-Standard Notifications
Applications can use the notification bar for many purposes.
In the picture above you can see that the applications Battery Indicator Pro creates an icon to display the battery strength as a percentage and also gives additional information about the battery when the notifications are opened.
The application Status Notes allows you to place notes to yourself in the notifications area and creates a shortcut for making these notes.
