Many users report that the mic for speech-to-text input does not show up all the time. A work-around is to install an alternate keyboard such as Better Keyboard or SlideIt. In my experience once one of these is installed the mic will always be present on the built-in keyboard.
If you have the disappearing mic issue and are using a task killer or a start-up manager that prevents services from starting at boot uninstall the task killer or start-up manager and see if the problem goes away.
Killing the process for the Android keyboard has worked for me to get the mic back on the keyboard. Related forum thread.
The mic will not show up when you have the google search bar open, there is a mic on the search bar instead.
The emoticon key is shown in the texting app, the carriage return key in other apps.
